Informing Sustainable Choices: Discover the Life Cycle Initiative

Decision-makers are often presented with choices about consumption and production that can have profound long-term environmental, social, and economic impacts. The UNEP’s Life Cycle Initiative, a multi-stakeholder partnership between public and private organizations, empowers decision-makers with robust, science-based life-cycle tools and knowledge.

By enabling the application of life-cycle approaches, the Initiative accelerates progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals faster and more efficiently.

Our Work:

The Life Cycle Initiative delivers on two broad activity areas:

  1. Foster the Enabling Conditions to use LCA: We facilitate science-based, global consensus building to establish the fundamental knowledge required for life-cycle approaches. Governments, industries, and consumers benefit from enhanced access to Life Cycle Knowledge, LCA data, and consensus methodologies . We foster widespread adoption of life-cycle approaches by enhancing skills and capacity through our LCA Networks and e-learning modules. Learn more about our methodologies and data platforms on our website.
  2. Enhance the application of LCA: We collaborate with a broad spectrum of public and private stakeholders to mainstream life-cycle approaches into decision-making and policy-making. We apply life-cycle approaches to sectors with significant environmental impacts. Currently, our focus includes mining and minerals, buildings and construction, plastics and textiles. A recent example of our work is A policymakers' guide to Life Cycle Assessment, available in multiple languages.

Get Involved:

Businesses, governments, NGOs, research institutions, and individuals can all contribute to and benefit from the Life Cycle Initiative.
